The Huntington Arts Council, in collaboration with our neighbors The Huntington Historical Society, invites artists to participate in Interpretive Sights: Art in Facts. Interpretive Sights will seek to tie together the relationship between art and history through direct inspiration of select artifacts and historical documents representing Huntington’s storied history. Entries will draw inspiration directly from one chosen object (per work) of the six selected from the Huntington Historical Society’s Collections. Click here for all of the details.
Huntington Councilwoman Joan Cergol and the Town’s Committee to Commemorate Black History invite all artists to participate in a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a public art project celebrating Black history in the Town of Huntington. A budget not to exceed $75,000 is available for this project, which is expected to cover all aspects of the commission, including design, fabrication, installation and related incidental costs.
The public art project will be located at Fair Meadow Park in Huntington Station, on the northwest corner of the intersection of Park Avenue, Pulaski Road, and East Fifth Street. The committee is looking for a project that pays tribute to the contributions, and in many cases, sacrifices, of noteworthy Black residents from the Town’s earliest days to its present. Huntington has been home to African-American musicians, Pulitzer-prize winning journalists, religious leaders, writers, community activists, trailblazers, business owners, and elected officials. Regardless of their economic or social station, quite a few of these individuals have left a lasting imprint of their life’s passion, personal struggles and work in Huntington, and in some cases, far beyond. For your reference, we provide examples to inform you of our local African-American heritage that can be found online in booklets published by the Town’s African-American Historic Designation Council at www.huntingtonny.gov/African-American-Heritage.
Interested artists can obtain this RFP and its details after registering on the Town’s website: www.huntingtonny.gov/Bids/RFPs and/or www.huntingtonny.gov/Black-History-Art-Project. Please note the deadline for submissions is Friday, May 5, 2023.
